Choosing breastfeed or bottle-feed for your baby is one of the first decision expecting parents will make. Although there is no hard rule in anyone's favour or against and there is no right or wrong choice out of these two. WHO and all medical associations recommend breastfeeding to be the best for the babies. As per recommendations, babies should be breastfed exclusively for the first 6month and untill 12month (if mother and baby are comfortable with it).
As per studies and researches, its been proved that breast milk is the ideal form of nutrition for the new born babies. Its a perfect food for human body's digestive system. It contains vitamins and minerals, lactose, proteins which are easily digestable by new born baby's immature body.
Advantages Of BreastFeed:
- Good for digestion
Breast milk's components e.g vitamins, minerals, lactose, proteins, fats etc are easily digestable by new born baby's immature body. This results in very less chances of diarrhea or constipation.
- Immunity
Breast milk increases immune system to fight against various diseases. It protects against ear, respiratory & stomach infections, asthma, allergies, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol etc.
- Cost & availability
Breast milk doesn't cost you a penny but remember the nursing mothers should have a proper nutritious diet to help reproduction of required quantity of milk.
- Developing taste buds
Nursing mothers are recommended to eat all kind of fruits and vegetables. The produced milk thereafter get a taste of what the mother eats. This help the baby to get the taste of different food items.
- Convenience
Breast milk is always available fresh and at right temperature without sterilization, mixing.
Disadvantages Of BreastFeed:
- Initial Uncomfort
For the first time nursing mothers, its uncomfort situation to breast feed thier babies. But with support from father and grandmothers, they comeove it soon.
- Time
Yes, brest feed require your time and your free mind availability. As breast milk digests faster than bottle feed, mother are in need after every 2-3 hours particularly in the first few weeks.
- Limiting tea, coffee, wine
Breast mild is produced from the food the mother eats. If mother is consuming tea, coffee or wine, it will affect the produced milk. Its good not to have these things in your diet or consume very less of it.
Advantages Of BottleFeed:
- Convenience
Either parent or even the caregiver can feed the baby anytime.
- Time
Since bottle feed milk digests slowly, the frequency is less and baby won't need you for a longer time gap.
- Eat anything
Bottle feed baby's mothers are allowed to eat anything and any quantity. There is no limiation on any particular diet or drink.
Disadvantages Of BottleFeed:
- Cost
You need to buy bottles, nipples and the formula powder. Out of these formula power is a regular buying process wheras bottles and nipples are required to be repurchased when the old one goes bad.
- Preparation
The preparation process is time consuming. You need to prepare bottle with sterile water. Bottle and nipple should be sterilized before first use and should be washed properly before every use. As uncleaned bottles and nipples may transit bacteria.
- Immunity
Powdered milk lacks in antibodies that fights against diseases. They qould be having sufficient vitamins and minerals but doesn't provide protection against infection.
- Digestive problems
Formula feed babies have more gas and constipation problems.
